The past affects the present even without our being aware of it

– Francine Shapiro

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. EMDR is a well-researched and effective method of therapy for individuals who have experienced trauma. See the video below for a brief overview and further explanation.  Eye movements during REM sleep are the body’s natural way of processing and making sense of day-to-day information. Trauma is an event that overwhelms this usual process. EMDR helps to support the brain in processing traumatic events using dual attention stimulus which can be eye movements, tones, buzzers, or taping. EMDR is not hypnosis, does not involve retelling your entire experience, and does not change the memory. Rather, it works to “de-charge” the memory and to help you be able to reframe your negative beliefs. If you find that traumatic or negative life memories keep impacting your day-to-day life, EMDR may be a helpful approach.
