About Me

Janine Porter MSW RSW

I have been practicing within the Durham Region for over 7 years in various settings. I have my Master’s of Social Work from the University of Toronto and am a Registered Social Worker. I have experience working with a range of presenting problems in children, youth and adults. Throughout my career I have developed an interest and passion for working with individuals who have experienced trauma, working with them using current evidence-based modalities rooted in neurobiology.

Each person’s experience is unique. I am client-centered and work with clients at their own pace. I am a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (Level 2 CCTP-II) and have experience with a variety of treatment modalities: Internal Family Systems (IFS) Level 1 trained, EMDR, Polyvagal Theory, , Attachment, EFT, CBT, DBT, Mindfulness, Narrative Therapy and Equine Assisted Therapy. My current practice focus is on supporting adults who are experiencing the negative impacts of trauma in their day-to-day life.

Core Values

Acceptance

My goal is to provide clients with a non-judgmental empathetic space. Shame and guilt are often the emotions that feel most familiar for individuals who have experienced trauma. Receiving empathy within any relationship can feel like an uncomfortable experience. Within the therapeutic relationship, I strive to be accepting and nonjudgmental, to support clients to be empathetic and accepting of themselves.

Compassion

When a person is in “survival mode” there is limited space for anything else. My hope is to support individuals to compassionately notice the important role each of their parts has.

Connection

Our innate human need is for connection. Connection can often be frightening for those who have been traumatized by others. I believe in supporting individuals to learn to build positive connections with others and themselves.

“Trauma is not what happens to us but is what we hold on the inside in the absence of an empathetic witness”
